Susan Barton-Tait

With a diverse background and experiences across both Canada and the United States, my artistic journey has taken me on a fascinating path. Currently based in Hamilton, Ontario, I am happy to call The Cotton Factory my creative home.

I am an artist with a varied range of interests, exploring the concept of “home” in my artwork. Through my practice, I delve into the notions of fragility, impermanence, and repetition in everyday life, seeking to create a sense of structure and tranquility. I employ multiple techniques such as weaving, knitting, batik, crocheting, felting, and paper making, using them to manipulate materials and create intricate designs. The act of working with my hands is an integral part of my creative process, providing me with a tactile connection and leading to unexpected discoveries. In addition to traditional mediums, I integrate electronic media and video projection into my installations, blending sculptural elements harmoniously.

Since 1972, I have been actively participating in solo, group, and touring exhibitions, earning recognition and awards from various granting agencies. My artwork has found its place in both public and private collections, including esteemed collections such as the Manitoba Visual Art Bank, The Canada Council Art Bank, and the Massey Foundation.

I have pursued my education at institutions such as Queen’s University, University of Iowa, University of Manitoba, and the Banff School of Fine Arts. Throughout my career, I have honed my artistic skills but also shared my knowledge as an educator, mentor, and art juror. Additionally, I have operated a gallery, providing a platform for other artists to showcase their work.
